Senior Software Engineer
LineVision
Software Engineering
Boston, MA, USA
USD 140k-155k / year + Equity
Build software that reaches the physical world — your code translates real-world sensor data from transmission lines into operational decisions at the largest utilities in the country.
We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join our Onboarding Systems team and build full-stack tools that sit at the intersection of real-world sensor data and grid operations. You will own features end-to-end, from frontend interfaces used by customers and internal teams to the backend systems and APIs that process and deliver line monitoring data. If you want to write code that ships, matters, and runs on infrastructure supporting the U.S. electrical grid, join us at LineVision, Built In Boston Best Places to Work!
What will you do?
Core Responsibilities and Key Performance Objectives
- Build and ship features across the stack, contributing to both frontend (React/TypeScript) and backend (Python) components with a high standard for code quality.
- Design, plan, and execute project initiatives end-to-end, from scoping and design docs through production deployment and post-launch monitoring.
- Own the development and enhancement of internal and external tooling used to deliver line capacity upgrades and sensor data products to utility clients.
- Conduct pull request reviews and pair coding sessions with engineers across the team, raising the quality bar and accelerating shared understanding of the codebase.
- Contribute to testing infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, and developer tooling that help the team ship with confidence.
- Mentor junior engineers actively, investing in their growth through consistent feedback, pairing, and code review.
Within the first 3 months:
- Deliver small-to-medium impact features with minimal guidance, demonstrating command of the LineVision codebase and deployment patterns.
- Identify and ship at least one targeted improvement to an existing system, whether a bug fix, performance gain, or developer experience improvement, that has visible team impact.
- Build working relationships with engineering teammates and begin contributing meaningfully to design discussions.
Within the first 6 months:
- Own the design and delivery of at least one end-to-end feature with direct customer impact, from technical spec through production deployment.
- Troubleshoot and resolve production issues independently, communicating status and resolution clearly to the team and relevant stakeholders.
- Author design documents for upcoming work and drive alignment across engineering and product.
Within the first year:
- Become a go-to resource for new feature work, architectural decisions, and cross-functional technical questions.
- Meaningfully reduce technical debt in at least one area of the codebase, identifying the problem, proposing the approach, and executing or coordinating the resolution.
- Take clear ownership of the growth of at least one junior engineer through consistent mentorship, code review, and pairing.
How to succeed in this role
Key Competencies
- Critical Thinking: Approach code and system design challenges with genuine curiosity. Ask why before how, explore tradeoffs deliberately, and propose solutions that account for edge cases and long-term maintainability.
- Delivering Innovative Solutions: Devise and iterate on technical solutions with a growth mindset. Embrace ambiguity in problem statements and bring creative, well-reasoned approaches to novel engineering challenges.
- Taking Ownership: Take full responsibility for the features and systems you build, including quality, reliability, and downstream impact on teammates and customers. Communicate proactively when scope, timeline, or technical constraints shift.
- Follow Through – Execution: Deliver quality work on time. Adhere closely to requirements, resolve open questions proactively with stakeholders, and hold yourself accountable to the commitments you make to the team.
- Empowering Others: Invest in the engineers around you. Share knowledge freely, give timely and constructive feedback, and recognize that team outcomes matter more than individual output.
Essential Skills
- Proficiency in Python and TypeScript; experience with React for frontend development.
- Experience designing and building RESTful APIs and working within cloud-native architectures (AWS preferred).
- Proven ability to own production-level deployments, including monitoring, incident response, and post-deployment validation.
- Comfort working across the stack - you can own a feature from database schema through UI without needing a specialist at each layer.
- Strong code review skills; you write clear, actionable feedback and hold a high bar for quality in your own work and others'.
What Sets the Best Candidates Apart
- Experience in a startup or early-stage environment where scope was broad, tooling was still being built, and ownership extended well beyond a defined ticket queue.
- A genuine interest in mentoring junior engineers and a track record of making the people around you better.
- Experience working closely with data science or sensor/IoT teams to productionize data pipelines or analytical outputs.
- Familiarity with calibration workflows, time-series data, or physical sensor systems.
Reporting & Team Structure
- Reports to the Software Engineering Manager, Onboarding Systems.
- Collaborates closely with Data Science, Product, and Client Success teams.
Interview Process
- Apply Online.
- Round 1: Phone screen (Recruiter)
- Round 2: Hiring Manager Interview
